Profile Details

Mr. Torwali, a conservationist in natural and cultural heritage,was born and raised in the idyllic valley Bahrain Swat. He has been conducting research on the minority languages in north Pakistan; and is involved in preserving, documenting and promotion of the Dardic and other endangered languages and culture. He has a lasting interest in conservation of the rich and diverse natural resources in the region from Hindu Kush to the foot of Himalaya via the Karakorum in Pakistan.

Mr. Torwali is also involved in human rights protection; and regularly contributes media articles to newspapers such The News, Express Tribune, Dawn, Daily Times, Pakistan Today and The Friday Times. A number of research papers on extremism, militancy and minority languages are also in his credit. He has also been active in peace development in Swat; and in Pakistan. He has been committed to the right of freedom of expression amidst the worst insurgency in Swat; and for his commitment to freedom of expression the Human Rights Watch has recently feted him.

At present, Mr. Torwali is leading Idara Baraye Taleem-o-Taraqi (IBT) or Institute for Education and Development, a nonprofit organization based in Swat working alongside the communities for an integrated and sustainable development. Presently Mr. Torwali works at IBT [www.ibtswat.org] as Executive Director.
